Our annual Operation E.L.F. Christmas toy drive program at Dorchester Children’s Advocacy Center to help provide Christmas for any of our clients in need. We make sure that we give each child several gifts from their wish list, and provide the gifts for all of the children in the family. Last year we provided a memorable Christmas for approximately 300 children and families in our community. Many of the parents and caregivers we help do not have the resources to buy new items, so for many of these children; our gifts are the only ones they open on Christmas morning. We work closely with local groups, schools, companies, churches, families, and organizations who shop for gifts, set up angel trees, put up toy donation drop-offs, and collect monetary donations so that we can continue to provide for so many families in the area. We organize all of the gifts we receive and shop for from wish lists to make sure each child gets age-appropriate toys, clothes, jewelry, games, bikes, and sports gear. We also provide Christmas for kids that have been newly placed in foster care. Each year starting in November, we collect new toys, games, electronics, gift cards, and cash donations for children from birth to 17 years of age.

Who do we help?

As much as we would love to be able to help every family that needed help, we simply must limit our reach to the children who have received services in our facility and their siblings who are in need. We provide for children from newborn through 17 years old, male and female that have been clients at our Center within the past three years.

What is our biggest need each year?

Providing for the teenagers always possess the biggest challenge for us. The truth is, they are harder to shop for, request more expensive items and more specific tastes. Some of the items that we enjoy giving to our older children include PJs, sports equipment, make-up, jewelry, electronics, hygiene gift sets, and perfume/cologne.

Please see out Suggest Gift List for ideas!

What do we NOT accept?

Candy and food of any kind, used toys/clothes/books etc., and open or damaged items. Please do not send anything personalized.

How does it work?

  1. Beginning in October, we start asking our families to fill out a form where we collect information on the child’s wish list items and any clothing or shoe sizes that they can provide for their kids.
  2. Participating businesses and organizations begin filling out their 2018 Operation E.L.F. Form (Now available for 2018!) by mid-November so we can disburse our Angels before the Black Friday shopping weekend if possible. If you would like to participate and be included on our flyer, you must sign up prior to November 9, 2018.
  3. Our community partner’s work on getting gifts collected and are asked to turn in their items by the deadline, FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2018. This allows us time to collect, sort, and distribute to our families in order for them to have their items before Santa arrives on Dec. 25th. Transportation for some families is limited so we urge our participants to stick to the deadlines provided to help ensure everyone gets their gifts on time.
  4. After all of the donations are in, our Victim’s Advocate, Alexis lead the charge making sure no kids get missed! The staff jumps in to help stuff bags full of toys, clothes, books and more to have ready for the families when they come to pick up.

Can I make a monetary or gift card donation?

Yes! We use these to fill in any holes, or any last minutes kids that may come in our door during those last few weeks leading up to Christmas. Any gift cards or monetary donations can be sent to Dorchester Children's Advocacy Center c/o Melinda Hartoin 303 E. Richardson Ave., Summerville, SC 29483. Please make checks payable to Dorchester Children's Advocacy Center and be sure to specify your donation is for Operation E.L.F. Receipts for tax purposes will be mailed to the address included with the donation.

What happens to any unused donations?

Monetary donations remain allocated to the Operation E.L.F fund and will be used in following years to purchase anything that is needed for the program. Tangible items that are donated, that we are unable to find a suitable recipient for, will be donated to a similar organization supporting children.
